Where does the money go?

Scout groups spend a lot of time and effort each year engaged in fund raising activities, and we are often asked where the money goes and how it is spent. This is a good question and we will try to explain. Many of the scouting activities that we provide are very simple, but can attract a lot of hidden costs. This page highlights some of the costs of the most traditional of Scouting activities; camping.

Your contributions to the group are always very valuable, so if after reading this page you would like to donate some money to help the group, you will find a donation button at the bottom of the page. We thank you for your generosity, no matter how small your contribution may be.

Patrol Tent

Patrol Tent - £500

A patrol tent is a basic tent that has been used in Scouting for many decades. The tent will sleep six scouts and be resistant to most weather conditions.

Patrol Tent Fly Sheet - £300

A fly sheet is an additional sheet of canvas that is added on top of the main body of the tent. This has two uses; firstly to provide an additional waterproof layer, and secondly to provide additional insulation by trapping a layer of air between it and the main tent.

Ground Sheet
Ground sheet - £6

A patrol tent does not have any floor and so a separate sheet of tough plastic is spread across the grass before the tent is occupied, preventing damp. Ground sheets are used for various other activities where a dry base is required outside.

Tent Pegs - £5 for 10

A patrol tent, just like most other tents, is held upright by securing guy ropes to the ground using wooden tent pegs. These are used in various different sizes depending on the load that is being secured. Each patrol tent requires around 50 pegs in order to hold it securely.

Wooden Mallet
Wooden Mallet - £7.50

Tent pegs must be driven securely into the ground, and unlike the thin metal pegs used with lightweight tents, these pegs often require a lot of persuasion to enter the soil! Mallets are used for this, and many other Scouting purposes.

Dining Shelter - £250

Dining shelters, as the name suggests, are used to provide protection from the rain or strong sun when eating or engaged in other outdoor activities. Unlike patrol tents, dining shelters have no walls which allows more light to enter the space inside.

Gas Cooker

Gas cooker - £30

Cooking on open fires is not always practical, especially when it is necessary to cook inside due to bad weather. Gas cookers provide a quick, reliable and convenient way to cook in these circumstances.

Gas regulator - £8
Gas cylinder refill - £20

Cooking with gas cookers does, of course, require gas! We use two sorts of gas when camping; butane (supplied in blue cylinders) which is generally used for cooking, and propane (in red cylinders) which burns hotter and is used for space heating and rapidly boiling water. Gas regulators are used to connect the gas hose to the cylinder.

Tar Boiler
Tar boilers - £40

Tar boilers are large powerful gas burners, originally used by street repair workers to heat tar for use on the roads. These are useful when camping to heat massive quantities of water when catering for large numbers of people.

Tilley Lamp - £80

Tilley lamps are another very traditional item of Scouting equipment. A Tilley lamp is used for general purpose lighting at camp, and runs on pressurized paraffin fuel which is very economical and long lasting. Scouts are taught how to light a Tilley lamp (which can be quite tricky!) as part of their training.

Tilley lamp glass - £9
Tilley lamp lighting burner - £7

Tilley lamps require various accessories to keep them in working order. The mantle is a small cloth bag which is used to control the flame and produces a bright white light. The lamp glass protects the flame from wind and rain when lit. The burner is used to heat the mantle when lighting the Tilley lamp. All of these wear or break with age, requiring occasional replacement.

Gaz Stove - £15
Gaz canister - £1.50

It is not always practical to use the cooking stoves described above, for example when all equipment has to be carried in a rucksack when on an expedition. For lightweight camping, portable lightweight camping stoves are used. Gaz stoves run on small canisters of butane gas.

Trangia Stove
Trangia Stove - £52

This is another traditional piece of Scouting equipment, and is an alternative to the gas powered portable stoves. Trangia stoves are lightweight aluminum stoves that include a number of pans in a compact bundle. Trangia stoves burn methylated spirit which is cheap to buy and easy to use.

Please help us with our camping trips by donating to the group
