New GSL at 3rd Molesey

After many years of service Barry has stepped down from his position at 3rd Molesey. We would like to thank Barry for his years of hard work. Barry will continue to work with the Explorers section and the band, which he has done for many years. Chris Manning has taken on the role of GSL, but also continues to work with the Scout troop. Our new GSL can be reached via e-mail at gsl@3rdmoleseyscouts.org.uk.

Keeping a roof over our heads

Some of you may have noticed that the roof of the hut is getting rather old. It has served us well for the last 50 years, but is now in need of replacement. Some fundraising is going to be necessary to achieve this task, so please look out for events in the near future. If you have any ideas for generating some cash for this expensive project, our fundraising team is always ready to listen! Please contact them on fundraising@3rdmoleseyscouts.org.uk with your ideas. You can find out how you can help the group by visiting the fund raising page.

Green Fingers

We have recently begun to clear the garden at the back of the scout hut grounds, which had become overgrown and unusable. Over the course of the next few months we plan to transform this space into an area that can be used by all members of the group. We shall be asking for help from group members to assist with the removal of two trees at the top of the garden, which are consuming valuable space in our grounds. Images of the work can be found below and please contact us if you would be willing to help us with our efforts.

Duck Race - Wet, and completely quackers

On 21st May 3rd Molesey held their first duck race at the Wilderness in East Molesey. For those of you unfamiliar with the concept of a duck race, it involves taking a large quantity of plastic yellow ducks (each numbered and sponsored at a cost of £1) and pouring them into the water. The ducks then float down the river and the first one to cross the finish line wins a prize for its sponsor. The event was a big success and a lot of fun was had by all whom attended. The winner walked away with a pair of tickets for Chessington World of Adventure, and around £200 was raised for the group funds. You can view some photos of the day in our photo gallery.

Carnival! Not quite Rio De Janerio, but close...

Well OK, let's be honest, it's really not even close! Compared to how they do it in Rio, our carnival is a bit timid, but it's the thought that counts. For those of you who were in a coma on 3rd June; Molesey once again hosted the Molesey Carnival which took place on arguably the hottest day of the year in 2006 so far. This year was a special year; we celebrated the 30th anniversary since the carnival was re-instated after the war. The carnival is a major fund raising event for the group, and as normal we had a number of stalls available. The tea tent was present as normal selling various refreshments throughout the day. A new venture this year was the cooking and sale of burgers and hot dogs; this was an excellent success and we managed to sell out within a couple of hours. The archery stand and coconut shy were also present and generated a good amount of money. Our thanks go to all of our helpers both before, during, and after the carnival. Your efforts are very much appreciated.

Out with the old

After many years of faithful service, the old white scout minibus has become past its best and has been found a new home. In traditional 3rd Molesey enterprising style we decided to advertise it on eBay to raise whatever cash we could for group funds. We initially got a buyer who agreed to collect the minibus and donate £155 towards the group, but he broke the eBay rules and failed to pay or collect. The minibus has therefore been re-advertised and we will provide you with an update soon.

UPDATE !!
The minibus has been sold (again) on eBay and this time the buyer paid and collected it. Hooray! By a complete stroke of luck we managed to get precisely the same winning bid of £155 for it, and it has gone to its new home in Hampshire where it will be donating its gearbox to another van.

Successful Curry Night

Thank you to all those of you who came with us to the curry night. Your evening out helped to raise £160 for the group. We will be holding another one really soon, but please let us know if you have an idea for an alternative night out.

New Treasurer

After many years of hard work, our group treasurer, Jane, has decided to step down. We would like to thank Jane for her many years in this role, for which we are very grateful. The group has appointed a new treasurer, Sam, has taken over. If you were unaware that we had a treasurer at the group, then it may come as a surprise to you that there are large numbers of people who regularly contribute to the running of the group and we are always looking for additional help. If you would like to become involved either as a leader or a helper behind the scenes then we would be very pleased to hear from you. Please contact our Group Scout Leader.

Boxing Day Football : 5-5

Once again the masses gathered on the recreation ground in Molesey on Boxing Day morning, for our traditional "rules optional" game of football. For many years it has been accepted that the game should result in a draw, and so both teams were happy when the whistle blew after one hour. The score? 5-5, of course!

The photos can be found in our photo gallery.

Scouts Help Elderly with Christmas Shopping

The Scout troop was once again involved in the effort to assist older members of the community with their Christmas shopping at Tesco / Marks & Spencer at Brooklands. Click here for the full story.
